Why Redmond Garlic is Different

Crushed with Garlic contains powerful bioidentical garlic oil. It’s highly concentrated, which means much less is needed to gain the same benefits as other garlic forms. Bioidentical oil has the same flavor and organosulfur compounds as natural garlic—but it’s consistently more bioactive and stable. Crushed Garlic is a smart, safe, and effective choice as a garlic supplement and natural loose mineral salt horses love!

CRUSHED GARLIC FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I feed my horse too much garlic?

The short answer is yes. Garlic is a powerful little plant with amazing healing, disease-inhibiting, and natural fly-repelling properties, but it needs to be fed in the proper amounts. We’ve taken care to ensure Crushed with Garlic serving recommendations fall within the National Research Council’s guidelines of how much garlic to feed horses. Learn more here.

Can pregnant or lactating mares eat garlic?

Garlic provides many valuable benefits for horses, including mares. However, pregnancy introduces a host of factors and changes in the equine body. We recommend consulting with your vet to ensure the best outcome for your pregnant or lactating mare (and foal) and determine whether feeding garlic meets her specific needs.

Does garlic cause anemia in horses?

Yes, in rare cases garlic-induced anemia can happen. It may occur quickly if your horse is snacking on wild garlic and onions growing in pastures, or slowly because of over-supplementing. Equine studies show feeding more than 0.4 grams per kilogram body weight of freeze-dried garlic can lead to Heinz body anemia in horses. That is the equivalent of feeding a 500-kilogram (1,100-pound) horse 200 or more grams per day, which is just under half a pound. That's a lot of garlic! While this amount could easily be consumed by horses eating wild garlic, it is unlikely you would feed this amount on purpose.

What is the difference in feeding my horse garlic bulbs, garlic powder, or Redmond Garlic?

The garlic oil used in Redmond Rock Crushed with Garlic is 12x stronger than garlic alone and 25% more concentrated than garlium (a garlic additive manufactured in Italy). Redmond garlic is not a flavor, it’s a bioidentical garlic oil that acts as a functional food additive meant to improve animal health and performance. If you used dried garlic on your feed, it would cost 8-9 times more to reach the same potency of Redmond garlic, and dosage accuracy would be incredibly hard to achieve.

Is Redmond Rock Crushed with Garlic safe to use year round?

We do not recommend feeding garlic to your horse year-round. Follow appropriate Crushed with Garlic dosage instructions based on your horse’s size, and use only during fly season. (The product should be used for a maximum of 6 consecutive months.)

Can I use Redmond Rock Crushed with Garlic at the same time as other Redmond products?

We always recommend using Crushed with Garlic in combination with Daily Gold. However, Redmond Rock Crushed, Crushed with Garlic, and Daily Red are all loose mineral salts targeted to meet different needs and should not be fed together.

First time using Redmond Rock Crushed with Garlic? Here's what you need to know:

If this is your first experience with the product, here are some helpful tips:
  • 1. Start feeding Crushed with Garlic 4-6 weeks before fly season sets in for best results repelling insects.
  • 2. Feed daily to encourage hydration, deliver necessary minerals and electrolytes, and as a natural repellent for flies, mosquitoes, ticks, and other biting insects.
  • 3. Remember, you can overfeed garlic, so follow the safe dosing instructions on the package to ensure your horse reaps the benefits of garlic without any health risks.
  • 4. Redmond Rock Crushed with Garlic is not a pesticide; it is a repellent. While pests won't disappear, your horse will experience relief from flies landing, biting, and irritating.

Great product

I really like this product as do my horses. We have started to note the difference in the flies etc.....around on them. I grew up with garlic in food for us and our dogs for the same reasons...LOL kept the nats and sandfleas from biting

Hi Lee! Thank you for your 5-star review! We’re delighted to hear that both you and your horses are enjoying the product and noticing a difference with the flies. Your satisfaction is our top priority. It’s amazing how effective natural remedies like garlic can be, isn’t it? Your experience growing up with garlic really highlights its benefits. We appreciate you sharing your success!

Gave my mule terrible diarrhea

I added a very little bit to her dinner (gradual introduction) and by day 3 she was having the worst cow plops. I immediately stopped giving it to her and about a day and a half later she returned to normal. The flies seemed just as happy with her poo in liquid form as they do in healthy form so I'm not sure it helps with that much, either.

Hello Kat,
Thank you for sharing your experience with Daily Red Crushed with Garlic. We’re truly sorry to hear about the issues your mule faced, and that you didn’t find success in reducing the flies. We understand that not all animals and areas respond the same, and while nearly all our customers rave about this product, we have a “love it or return it” policy to stand behind our products. Please watch for a refund on your account and if you have product left over, please just pass it onto a friend. We look forward to serving you again if there are other Redmond products that fit your needs. Have a wonderful day!

Love it all horses are finally eating it. But what would you suggest to feed after fly season or can I keep feeding it throughout the fall season of winter n back to spring

Good morning, Linda! That’s a great question! As the seasons change, so do your horse’s needs, both inside and out. Fall and spring are ideal times to evaluate your equine mineral supplements. During fall and winter, you should switch to Daily Red Crushed or Daily Red Fortified minerals. In the spring, right before those dreaded flies begin to wake up, resume using Daily Red with Garlic products. I hope this helps! Feel free to reach out with any additional questions or concerns.

Smells strong!

When the package arrived, we were all aware. This stuff stinks! Our gelding eats about half a dose, carefully picking out his grain around the salt. My mare moves her lips over it if we are lucky and then won't eat any grain if it is mixed in. We started the salt protocol too late to give the bug defense a fair trial, and only started two weeks ago anyway, so we can't say if it really works. Our bug tortured gelding does eat enough to make a difference, we hope, and maybe will eat more as he gets used to it. Our little red mare? We won't hold our breath. She might eat it. Sometimes. Someday. Come fall, we will see if the strong odor attracts or deflects the bears.

Hello, Jane! Thanks for your feedback. Garlic sure does have a potent smell, but if you can detect it, it’s doing its job. However, if your horses initially turn up their noses at the smell or taste of Daily Red garlic products, don’t give up! Consider gradually adding the garlic salt (mixed with regular Redmond salt) to their feed. Slowly increase the garlic portion until they accept it fully. You might also try mixing it into applesauce or creating a mash. Feel free to reach out for more ideas!
