The short answer is yes. Garlic is a powerful plant with healing, disease-inhibiting, and natural fly-repelling properties, but it needs to be fed in the proper amounts. Studies have shown that feeding more than 0.4 grams per kilogram body weight of freeze-dried garlic can lead to Heinz body anemia in horses. To put that in perspective, that’s the equivalent of feeding a 1,100-pound horse 200 or more grams per day, which is just under half a pound. That's a lot of garlic! While this amount could easily be consumed by horses eating wild garlic in pastures, it is unlikely you would give this amount on purpose. For your horse’s safety, the garlic in Daily Red Garlic products falls within the National Research Council’s recommended safety guidelines.

We do not recommend feeding horses garlic year-round. We suggest using Daily Red Crushed Garlic or Daily Red Fortified Garlic for a maximum of six months consecutively. Start feeding Daily Red Crushed Garlic or Daily Red Fortified Garlic 2-3 weeks before fly season sets in for your location. Regular consumption will create an odor that pests stay away from, but it takes 2-3 weeks to be effective.
Daily Red Garlic products are not pesticides, they are repellents. Pests may still hover nearby, but you will see fewer flies landing on, biting, and irritating horses.
Feed the recommended dose daily to encourage hydration, deliver trace minerals, and as a natural repellent for flies, mosquitoes, ticks, and other biting insects. You can overfeed garlic, but if you follow the dosage instructions, your horse will be safe
